Chapter Eight

They didn’t make it to the river by end of day. True, it had seemed to be a good distance from the mountain where they’d spent the night before, but it didn’t look like it would take more than one day to reach it.

But then she hadn’t realized the beasts they were riding had only one speed.

And they hadn’t left at day break, so they hadn’t traveled a full day before the sun began to inch toward sunset.

Kameron began to look for a campsite for the night that they had some hope of defending.

There wasn’t one to be had, unfortunately.

Amanda was tired and she’d at least slept some the night before. She was pretty sure none of the others had slept at all. And they’d all been riding almost non-stop.

They decided to press on. They stopped only a handful of moments to relieve themselves and grab something they could eat while they rode and set out again.

The beasts were tired by that time and very likely would have balked at continuing, but they were hungry, as well, and there was no feed for them and nothing around them to feed off of.

Which was, basically, the same situation many of the forest creatures that had survived thus far had found themselves in.

No food for the herbivores among them and way less prey for the predators since so many beasts had died.

Amanda didn’t know when the predators had begun to stalk them but as soon as the light began to wane they got bolder and bolder, creeping closer and closer.

She didn’t know if they were after them or the beasts they were riding, but before the moons of Beauterre rose Kameron, Trinity, and Caleb had taken their weapons out and begun to shoot the ones that were the boldest.

It unsettled the beasts they were riding every time. For a few minutes they would bounce and scream and fight the reins and then they would settle down again—at roughly the same speed as before.

That was more exhausting than simply hanging on and being rattled by the damned things until it felt like her teeth were going to fall out.

She was so relieved when she saw a glimmer in front of them that told them they were near the river that she felt like crying.

More disappointment awaited them, however, because there was nothing near the river that suggested it would be a safer place to camp than there had been before.

They pulled the beasts to a halt to debate the matter, but they had few choices. The river was wide enough and deep enough to discourage most of the predators from attempting a crossing. So it would work in that sense to cross.

On the downside, that would put them on lands belonging to the l’okins.

Amanda had a hard time believing they would be patrolling the boundary, though, and felt like it was the less dangerous choice of the two.

It transpired that she was wrong, but on the other hand they got a little rest before they encountered their next big problem.
